18lb full suspension disc brake MTB

This Strike Ltd based FS bike could have been a fair bit lighter but I wanted a truly useable, strong and reliable bike as opposed to a show bike. In its original planned V brake spec it would have comfortably been in the 17lb mark but a move to disc brakes made it a more desirable build and ultimately a better stopping bike in the wet weather. Getting it to under 20lb was relatively straightforward once the super light discontinued Scott frame had been sourced from Singapore, but then getting the build to under 19lb was a lot more difficult and made things way way more expensive. That's when the real fun and challenging part of the build started though, having to pay close attention to every single nut, bolt, chainlink, cm of cable and shred of carbon fibre in order to achieve my goal. The result is nothing short of incredible... the bike rides like a dream and is fast as hell.

BOTTOM BRACKET

Specialities TA Axix Pro titanium 152g

Bought with x2 2.5mm spacers and both of these installed between drive side cartridge bearings and cup. Net effect is to pull the spindle inwards on the drive side thus giving a good chainline. One of the spacers was sanded to ~1.8mm as well to stop the granny ring rubbing against the cup face,

FRONT BRAKES

Formula Oro Minnaar ltd edition lever/caliper/hose/oil 208g
Forumla Oro Puro aluminium backed pads 10g (19g)
Titanium caliper to adaptor & adaptor to frame bolts 14g (23g)

14g (17g)
Stans Aluminium 160mm rotor disc, 63g (108g)
Aluminium bar clamp bolts, 1g (4g)
FRM ergal Disc rotor bolts, 4g (10g)

Only 250 sets made worldwide and only a couple fo dozen or so imported into the UK. In this tuned form they are still heavier than the Oro Puro because they lack the Puros specilaist Hose connection screws, caliper screws and pad retaining pins.

KCNC 12-27 CroMo/Scandium/7075 9 speed

to be fair, this aluminium affair won't last long. Will be replaced by a shimano dura-ace.

CHAINRINGS

Specialities TA 44t tuned (light shaving) 77g (81g)
Specialities TA 32t 44g
Specialities TA 22t 22g

Not the lightest by any means and theres plenty of room for shaving them... but they shift well and last quite long compared to alternatives.

141

FRONT DERAILLEUR

Shimano XT E type 137g

Had a lighter 125g XTR M952-E with carbon backing plate but it sadly didn't shift very well in this config and was almost impossible to setup.

137

REAR DERAILLEUR

SRAM X0 195g

There is another 22g to be saved here by changing teh pulleys to carbon fibre speedware pulleys... will do this soon no doubt

195

FORK

Spinner Aeris , 8"3/4 steerer, includes starnut 1261g

The >100g saving over the Pace RC39 makes them worthwhile. I discounted the Rockshox SID for flex issues and the FRM forks are reputedly all but unuseable.

1261

REAR SUSPENSION SHOCK

Fox RP3 Pro 236g

236

FRAME

2003 Scott G-zero Strike Limited 1771g

Unused frame luckily sourced from Singapore. Still one of the lightest FS frames ever made and top of the weight weenies listings, only really bettered by the new 1800g scott spark frame.

Just awesome pedals in every respect.

QUICK RELEASES

BBB steel bolt-on skewers 69g

Had some lighter 58g USE spin stix but I am happier using these steel axles. Apart from anything else the spin stix were just too short.

69

SEATPOST CLAMP

Extralite the Clamp 12g

12

SEAT

Becker Carbon 63g

chose this over an AX-lightness apollo as it was more comfortable. Its also real reinfoced MTB spec so ignoring the road use only AX-lighness phoenix arguably the very lightest MTB seat money can buy.

63

SEATPOST

AX-Lightness Deadelus 119g

Horribly expensive but reputedly the lightest layback seatpost in the world.

125

SHIFTERS

SRAM X0 trigger shifters 189g
Aluminium fixing bolts & lever adjustment bolts 5g (15g)
(no half clips required as bolt onto the brake clips) 0g (17g)

There are lighter shifters but when the feel and work this good there can be no other.
